Food is one of the most important things you should prepare when preparing for emergencies. 3 types of food should be acquired. 3 days or more worth of food for your Evacuation Bag (72-Hour Kit, Bug-Out Bag). This will include High Calorie, easily stored and carried, easy or no preparation needed, and long shelf life food (MRE’s, Backpacking Freeze Dried Meals, Heater Meals, etc…). Next would be food in your 90 Day Food Supply. This food should be food that does not need refrigeration. Picture your family living in your home with no utilities for 3 months. Also plan on food that needs no or little preparation. If the utilities are down, you will want to have enough fuel and means of cooking to prepare your 90 Day Meals through that time. You can live a long time on cold cans of ravioli without needing any utilities at all. The third type of food storage is your longer food storage or what we have often called the “One Year Supply”. This food should be food that will not be glamorous but will keep you alive. It is mostly long shelf life foods like Wheat, White Rice and Pinto Beans. Thes foods will provide you with complete proteins and allow you to stay alive. |
